Healing Together: Finding Mental Strength and Hope After the Tai Po Fire

December 1, 2025

The recent tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has deeply affected our community. Many of us in Hong Kong are grappling with profound grief and sorrow. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones, to the injured, and to everyone touched by this heartbreaking event.

Over these last few days, I have often found myself lost in thought, replaying the images of the devastating fire. Vivid scenes of helpless individuals—young and old—flooded my mind: children crying, women wailing as they struggled to escape their homes, and the brave firefighters battling to save lives without regard for their own safety. I noticed myself becoming increasingly trapped in these mental images, their intensity amplifying my feelings as my thoughts spiraled.

That’s when I snapped out of it, reminding myself of the power of Mental Fitness. Doing my PQ reps, or in common terms, mindfulness exercises bringing my mind and attention to my body and senses. Once I gained some power over my mind, in my own way, I took action by canceling an upcoming meet and making changes to other community events. While these may seem like small gestures, they were tangible steps I could take to not only show my solidarity for our community, but also be able to help myself with the power of positive thinking.

Life can often feel like an unyielding battle, akin to the instinctive act of keeping your hand on a hot fire. The natural response is to pull away from that pain, however, some may inadvertently cling to it, overwhelmed by fear or a sense of duty. Mental fitness involves cultivating emotional resilience and well-being during challenging times. It requires fostering a mindset that prioritizes positivity, connection, and support. Just as physical fitness demands dedication and practice, mental fitness requires kind, intentional efforts.

Here are some gentle ways to enhance mental fitness, especially during this difficult time:

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s vital to recognize and honor your feelings of sadness and grief. Allow yourself the space to process these emotions without judgment.
  2. Embrace Community: Connecting with others—whether through shared stories or simply being present—can provide much-needed comfort. Engaging in conversations with friends or support groups fosters a sense of belonging.
  3. Practice Small Acts of Kindness: In times of pain, small gestures of kindness—toward yourself or others—can serve as a balm. A comforting cup of tea or a thoughtful message can uplift spirits.
  4. Create Moments of Stillness: Finding quiet moments to breathe deeply can help ground you. Even a few minutes of mindfulness can relieve the weight of heavy emotions.
  5. Focus on the Present: While it’s natural to reflect on the past, try to also anchor yourself in the present. Engage in activities that bring you joy or comfort, however small they may be.

Moving Forward Together

Let’s move forward hand-in-hand, choosing to foster resilience, compassion, and understanding. By doing so, we honor those we have lost and create a future that emphasizes strength and community.
